Notion desktop beta: new tabs

In this help doc

Try a faster, lighter way to work with tabs in the Notion desktop app. The desktop beta is opt-in, and you can go back to the normal app whenever you want.

The Notion desktop beta allows you to try new Notion Mac and Windows desktop features early, and share your feedback to help us improve Notion. Joining is your choice, and you can leave at any time. This doesn't change Notion on the web or on your phone.

With new tabs, all the tabs in a window share one running copy of Notion. Here's what that means day to day:

  • Switching between tabs is faster.

  • The sidebar stays put instead of reloading each time you switch.

  • Your open tabs keep their place, including how far you scrolled and what you had selected.

  • Notion uses less memory when you have multiple tabs open.

There are two ways to join the beta.

  • You can join any time from Settings → Preferences → Desktop beta.

  • The Try Desktop Beta button will appear in the tab bar when the beta becomes available. Click it, then choose Restart and try now.

Notion restarts when you join the beta, and your open tabs come with you.

A few things move around when you join, so it helps to know what to expect:

  • Each window holds one workspace. If a window had pages from more than one workspace, it splits into separate windows, one per workspace.

  • Tab groups become their own windows.

  • If you open a link to a page in another workspace, it opens in a different window.

  • Your open tabs carry over, and your old tab layout is saved. If you leave the beta, that layout comes back.

There are two ways to leave the beta and go back to classic tabs. You can leave the beta whenever you want.

  • Click the Beta button in the tab bar, choose Leave beta, and confirm.

  • Turn off Desktop beta in Settings → Preferences.

Either way, Notion restarts, and your classic tabs come back.

We'd love to hear how it's going. To share your feedback:

  • Click the Beta button in the tab bar and choose Report a bug or Send feedback.

  • This opens an email that's already filled in with your app version and system details. Add what happened and send it.

Note: Support can't troubleshoot beta issues. If something isn't working and it's getting in your way, leave the beta, then reach out if you still need help.

The beta is still a work in progress, so a few things have rough edges:

  • AI Meeting Notes on desktop can have trouble with the recording indicator, with pop-up and floating windows, and with ending a recording cleanly if the app restarts.

  • Some full-screen views may hide the tab bar.

  • The beta is for the Mac and Windows desktop app only.

FAQs

Will I lose my tabs when I join or leave?

No. Your open tabs carry over, and your old layout is saved and comes back when you leave.

Why did my window split into two?

Each window holds one workspace. If a window had pages from more than one workspace, it splits so each workspace gets its own window. Tab groups also become their own windows.

Does this change Notion on the web or on my phone?

No. The beta is only for the Mac and Windows desktop app.
