Manage sidebar presets for your workspace

Presets establish a starting point for members. They don't lock anyone's sidebar, so members can still change, remove, or reset any tab.

There are two kinds of presets:

• Default presets which are added for every member automatically. New members get them when they join.

• Optional presets which aren't added automatically. Members can add them on their own.

Every workspace needs at least one default preset.

1. Go to Settings → Sidebar.

2. Select Create preset.

3. Add the shortcuts and sections you want the tab to hold.

4. Give the preset a name.

You can also save a sidebar tab you already have as a preset, as long as that tab isn't already tied to one.

• To rename a preset, open it in Settings → Sidebar and change its name.

• To reorder presets, drag them into the order you want.

In Settings → Sidebar, drag a preset into the Default group or the Optional group. Presets in Default go to every member automatically. Presets in Optional are there for members to add themselves.

Some presets come built in from Notion. You can preview these or make your own copy, but you can't rename or change the originals.

To start from a built-in preset, duplicate it. You'll get an editable copy your workspace owns, and you can change that copy however you want.

When you delete a preset, it doesn't disappear right away. It moves to a Deleted list first, where you can review it. The preset is only removed when you save your changes.

Presets give members a starting point. Members stay in control of their own sidebar. They can:

• Get default presets automatically when they join.

• Add an optional preset in Customize sidebar → Add tab.

• Change or remove a tab that came from a preset.

• Reset a changed tab back to its preset.

Does every workspace need a default preset?

Yes. You need at least one default preset so new members start with a sidebar.
