This template contains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Certified Veterinary Technicians. These SOPs cover a wide range of tasks and responsibilities, starting with patient intake and initial assessment, which includes preparing for the intake, greeting the client and patient, collecting patient information, conducting a preliminary assessment, communicating findings to the veterinarian, preparing for the next steps, and ensuring proper documentation. The second SOP is on administering medications and treatments, which includes verifying the treatment plan, preparing the medication or treatment, ensuring patient safety, administering the medication or treatment, educating the client, documenting the treatment, and disposing of waste properly.
The third SOP is on conducting diagnostic tests, which includes verifying test requirements, preparing the patient, collecting samples, conducting in-house tests, preparing samples for external lab testing, performing imaging diagnostics, documenting results, communicating results to the veterinarian, and maintaining and cleaning equipment. The fourth SOP is on assisting in surgical procedures, which includes preparing the surgical environment, preparing the patient for surgery, assisting in patient anesthesia, maintaining sterile techniques, assisting the surgeon, monitoring the patient during surgery, post-surgery responsibilities, cleaning and restocking, documenting the procedure, and communicating with the client.
The fifth SOP is on patient discharge and owner education, which includes preparing for discharge, gathering necessary materials, explaining discharge instructions to the client, providing a demonstration, answering questions and addressing concerns, finalizing documentation, supporting follow-up care, assisting with patient and client departure, and following up post-discharge. The sixth SOP is on managing pharmacy and medication inventory, which includes receiving and verifying medication shipments, storing medications properly, maintaining accurate inventory records, dispensing medications safely, educating clients about medications, performing routine inventory audits, handling expired or unused medications, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, maintaining a clean and organized pharmacy area, and communicating issues to the team.
The seventh SOP is on operating and maintaining diagnostic equipment, which includes understanding equipment usage, preparing equipment for use, performing diagnostic tests, documenting and storing results, cleaning and disinfecting after use, performing routine maintenance, handling malfunctions, ensuring proper storage, staying updated on new technology, and communicating issues. The eighth SOP is on post-surgical care and monitoring, which includes transferring the patient to recovery, monitoring vital signs, assessing the patient’s condition, administering post-operative medications, managing patient comfort, handling emergencies, documenting recovery progress, preparing the patient for discharge, cleaning and disinfecting the recovery area, and participating in follow-up care.
The ninth SOP is on client communication and follow-up, which includes preparing for client interaction, providing updates during the visit, educating clients during discharge, addressing client questions and concerns, conducting post-visit follow-ups, handling client complaints or emotional situations, promoting preventative care, maintaining confidentiality, documenting communication, and fostering positive relationships. The tenth SOP is on clinic waste management, which includes identifying waste categories, following segregation protocols, handling hazardous waste with care, preparing waste for disposal, disposing of medications properly, cleaning and disinfecting waste areas, training team members, conducting routine audits, documenting disposal processes, and promoting sustainability.
